SCIENCES

Our science department offers four Regents science courses, including Living Environment, Biology, Earth Science-Ecology, Chemistry, and Physics, based on the standards and curriculum of the New York State Board of Regents. In addition, we offer Health and Nutrition as an option in the eleventh grade. Every Merkaz student must take three years of science, as per the requirements of the New York State Department of Education.

BIOLOGY- LIVING ENVIRONMENT- GRADE NINE

Students enrolled in this course will acquire an appreciation for all living things, their interaction with each other, and their relationship with the environment. Laboratory experiments related to the topics of study are a key feature of this course, thus giving the participants an excellent hands-on experience on practical scientific endeavors.

Prime topics here are as follows: Unity and Diversity among Living Things; Human Physiology; Maintenance in Living Things; Reproduction and Development; Genetics; Plants and Animals in their Environment. Two textbooks, a review book, and supplementary software enrich the course curriculum.

EARTH SCIENCE- GRADE TEN

In this course, students learn about the Earth and its complex processes, as well as its relationship to other cosmic bodies in space. They also study measurements and other experiments related to the mass, structure and movement of the earth. We also visit the Planetarium and work on rocks and minerals, both hands-on and interactively on the computer

CHEMISTRY- GRADE ELEVEN

This course introduces the students to the fundamental building blocks of nature and their relationship to one another. General topics include matter, energy, atomic structure, solutions, mathematical chemistry, and nuclear chemistry. Laboratory experiments are performed when needed to illustrate principles.

Topics of study include the following: Stochiometry; Matter: Its Phases and Properties; Compounds; Atomic Structure; The Periodic Table; Bonding; Molecular Structure; Energy; Reactions; Chemical Equilibrium; Electrochemistry; Organic Chemistry.

PHYSICS- GRADE ELEVEN

This course, part of the Merkaz science honors track, introduces the students to observation and measurement of the physical world.
Topics include the study of Forces and Motion; Energy; Electricity and Magnetism; Wave Phenomena; Quantum Theory; Two-dimensional Motion and Trajectories; and Electromagnetic Applications.

HEALTH AND NUTRITION

This course is an elective offered in the 11th or 12th grade. Students are taught about stress management, family values, basic nutritional theories, eating disorders and substance abuse. They learn about appropriate lifestyles and act through real-life scenarios. We discuss the impact of TV and peers on decision making and watch various videos to show the cause and effect of decisions on life.
